Alicia Keys Continues 'Digital Short' Tradition On 'Saturday Night Live'
The skit conjures up similarities to another hit video from the Lonely Island crew from a few weeks ago that featured then musical guest Rihanna . In "Shy Ronnie," Samberg teamed up to perform with the singer as another social misfit, though this time as a character suffering from a crippling shyness rather than a case of extreme flamboyancy.
While the Digital Shorts may seem to be a little formulaic at times — there's usually either the awkward collaboration ("When Two Worlds Collide") or the vulgar sing-along ("Jizz In My Pants") — they are often the fan favorite and highlight of the show. More often than not, the musical guests this season have been outshining the actual hosts: The Black Eyed Peas excelled over January Jones, Rihanna outshined Blake Lively and now Keys countered Charles Barkley's clumsiness with cool.
It's unclear whether "SNL" has a knack for writing great parts for musicians or if all musical guests are really actors waiting to emerge, but Samberg has clearly hit on a trend that words. Keep'em coming, Andy!
