In this production, Ace Young (“American Idol” Season 5 finalist and Grammy nominated songwriter) will star as “Danny.” Lauren Ashley Zakrin (understudy for “Elle Woods” in the first national tour of Legally Blonde) will star as “Sandy.” “American Idol” Season 5 winner Taylor Hicks continues to star as “Teen Angel.” Taylor Hicks made his debut on Broadway in the role. Mike Hodges directs this thriller about an IRA man hiding out in London. A Prayer for the Dying caused controversy on its UK release in 1987 due to its sympathetic portrayal of an IRA member. Hodges, the director of Get Carter (1971), struggled through a troubled production and the finished film is an overblown mess, but strangely compelling.
Mickey Rourke Stars in A Prayer for the Dying
Martin Fallon (Mickey Rourke) is involved in a botched ambush resulting in a bus full of children being blown up in a country lane. Haunted by his actions he heads for London and tries to arrange safe passage to the United States. On his trail are two of his colleagues, Docherty (Liam Neeson) and Donovan (Alison Doody), with orders to persuade him to return to Ireland. If Fallon refuses they must kill him.
Fallon is offered a passport, £50,000 and a ticket to the States if he carries out a hit for a London gangster called Jack Meehan (Alan Bates). Fallon turns down the job until he realises Meehan will send the police after him. In a case of extreme symbolism the hit takes place in a cemetery and is witnessed by the parish priest Father De Costa (Bob Hoskins).
Fallon returns to the church and compromises Father De Costa by confessing he carried out the killing. Bound by the seal of the confessional De Costa is forced to keep quiet which suits Meehan fine, but not his vicious younger brother Billy (Christopher Fulford). Fallon keeps an eye out for De Costa and befriends his blind niece Anna (Sammi Davis), but the police, Meehan’s men and the IRA are on his tail.
