That was the 1950s, after all, and I grew up with a mom who vacuumed in high heels, wore curlers to bed, and died at 92, two years ago, without one grey hair visible on her regularly coiffed head.
As much as any religious commandment, we middle-class '50s girls believed it our duty to make the most of our looks. It wasn't fun.
I'm talking budding teens going off to school in pointy padded bras, horsehair crinolines, teased hair and Annette Funicello-like makeup.

I also knew the rules. Nice girls didn't wear eyeshadow or mascara in the daytime. By the age of twelve, eyebrows were meant to be plucked and arched. The pain part was "the price you pay for beauty."
With plastic surgery not yet a mainstream option, women relied on the wonders whipped up for them by Max Factor and HelenaRubinstein. The name of my very first lipstick, "Powder Pink,'' is indelibly etched on my brain. My mom and her canasta[uncq] cronies wore Revlon's "Cherries in the Snow" or "Fire and Ice." They never would have believed normal suburban teens would someday sport lip shades dubbed "Puke" or "Orgasm."

After leaving the Mickey Mouse Club, Funicello remained under contract to Disney and appeared in the TV shows Zorro (1957), The Nine Lives of Elfego Baca (1958), and starred in the Disney feature films The Shaggy Dog (1959), Babes in Toyland (1961), The Misadventures of Merlin Jones (1964), and The Monkey's Uncle (1965).
In the early 1960s, Annette starred in a series of beach party movies with Frankie Avalon, including Beach Party (1963), Muscle Beach Party (1964), Bikini Beach (1964), Beach Blanket Bingo (1965), and How to Stuff a Wild Bikini (1965). During this time, she recorded a series of hit top-40 pop singles, including "Tall Paul," "First Name Initial," "How Will I Know My Love," and "Pineapple Princess."
