TV on DVD: 'The Barbara Stanwyck Show, Vol. 1'
This three-disc set ($38.99, E-1 Entertainment) is a fascinating curiosity.
Now almost forgotten, the star-driven anthology series was once a popular format during television's adolescence. Actresses of "a certain age," such as Barbara Stanwyck and her contemporary Loretta Young, found television -- and the anthology format in particular -- as a way to demonstrate to Hollywood that they were performers that ought not be ignored.
An elegantly attired and immaculately coiffed Stanwyck introduces each of the 15 30-minute programs in the set, delivers an epilogue, offers an occasional plug for the sponsor and stars in all but one episode. The episode in which Stanwyck doesn't appear stars Milton Berle as a homicidal con man in a presentation reminiscent of "Arsenic and Old Lace."
Each and every star earned by this set is on the strength of Stanwyck's performances. Since her program was an anthology, Stanwyck gets the opportunity to portray any number of strong and independent characters -- such as a sheriff's wife held hostage by a killer, a Hong Kong-based businesswoman helping a Chinese orphan immigrate to Pittsburgh, and an emotionally abused housewife plotting with her lawyer-lover to frame her rich husband for murder (shades of "Double Indemnity"). Even in an episode in which Stanwyck plays a grief-stricken mother in a catatonic state, all eyes are on her.

How did they get away with the barely double entendre in Take It off the E-String ? Not only is this obviously a scanty underwear-related ditty, but it's performed in a burlesque house in the appropriately named Lady of Burlesque (1944). Another mystery: why do I enjoy watching Barbara Stanwyck singing and dancing so much when she is plenty shaky when it comes to both skills? I wish she had filmed herself reading the phone book before she passed, because I have the feeling I would enjoy that as well.
