For non UK East Enders ia a soap opera and revolves around a pub called the Queen Victoria. The actress who plays the landlady is leaving and the BBC needed a big name to replace her. Cost them plenty.

They even wanted to redecorate and paint the walls lavender.

Danniella: Soap odd without Barbara
Danniella Westbrook has admitted she would find it "odd" to be on the EastEnders set once Barbara Windsor has left the soap.
The actress, whose latest stint as Sam Mitchell will soon be coming to an end, said she doesn't like thinking about Albert Square being without Barbara, who recently announced she is leaving the soap after 15 years.
"I love Barb, we're really good mates and it would be really odd to be there without Barbara," said Danniella, who has previously revealed the door is being left open for Sam's return.
"But Steve (McFadden) is there and Rita (Simon) is there and Sam (Womack) is there. It just would be odd without Barbara. I haven't thought about it, I don't like to think about Barbara not being there."
Danniella, who is gearing up to compete on Dancing On Ice, also insisted she doesn't know who killed Walford's Archie Mitchell (Larry Lamb), which viewers saw on Christmas Day.
"I do not know who killed Archie. I don't know who's in the line-up, I have no clue," she said.
Barbara Windsor mediates for Ricky Groves and Hannah Waterman ...
A source close to Ricky told The Sun: “Babs has taken on the role of mediator because things were getting a bit nasty.
“Hannah has arranged a meeting with Ricky next week with help from Babs at one of their pal’s houses to thrash out a deal.”
The pal added that Babs had tried in vain to get Hannah to reconsider her decision in vain.
The source revealed: “She’s been trying everything to save their marriage but Hannah is stubborn about it.
“It’s over. Hannah has been seeing a lawyer about getting a quickie divorce.”
