Labor number-crunchers are saying the contest between Ms Neal and Ms O'Neill, which will be decided in a vote of local branch members on March 6, is too close to call.
A senior figure from the NSW Right, which has control of Robertson, denied reports that faction bosses were backing Ms O'Neill.
The affable Ms O'Neill, who teaches education at the University of Newcastle, has twice stood for the state seat of Gosford, and came within 60 votes of success in 2003. Her defining experience was the death of her sister Helen from leukemia, at the age of 18 in 1983: "I learned that life can be very short and that every single day absolutely matters."Ms O'Neill, 49, grew up in a family of first-generation Irish immigrants who treasured traditional music. She says the joys of Australian life were driven home to her last year when she and her family attended a concert under the stars at a Hunter Valley winery.
"This is Australia," I thought. "This is what my parents came for."
