But the makeshift, let’s-put-on-a-show-right-here-in-the-barn spirit of early Corman movies still looks pretty winning, particularly in extra-cheap productions like “Creature” and “A Bucket of Blood” (1959). “Roger would put anybody to work, on anything,” Mr. Towne said. “Speed and efficiency and inventiveness were de rigueur on his sets.”
When, in the early ’60s, Mr. Corman’s budgets and shooting schedules expanded — a bit — those habits of creative corner-cutting had a more ambiguous effect. In 1964 Mr. Towne wrote the screenplay for “The Tomb of Ligeia,” the last, and best, of eight pictures concocted by Mr. Corman from the stories of Edgar Allan Poe . All of the previous seven Poe movies had looked unusually handsome — they were mostly shot on sets left over from more expensive major-studio productions — and all but one had starred the noted hambone Vincent Price .

Liu Jian (Jet Li) is a Chinese Cop sent to France to assist the french police in taking down a Chinese drug lord and his mysterious french connection. As it turns out, the french connection is Richard, a dirty french cop who leads the vice squad that Jian was sent to help. Richard intends to murder the Chinese drug lord and frame Jian for the crime.
However, Jian expertly eludes the french police when he realizes the truth about Richard and escapes with video evidence which may reveal the truth about Richard and his thugs. Left in a country he has never been to before, Jian attempts to elicit the help of Jessica (Bridget Fonda) -a US farm girl employed as one of Richard's hookers- but Richard is holding her daughter hostage in an orphanage in order to keep her on the street as a prostitute and silent about his malicious identity.
Entirely Alone in a Foreign LandAlthough Jian finds himself entirely alone in a foreign land and at odds with a malicious force of corruption, Jessica shares the same predicament, and fortunately their paths cross at just the right time; perhaps the storyline found itself in need as well.
When their paths do cross, the audience finds Jian in yet another one of the states Jet Li plays so well: a state of complete calm. It's a quality and attribute of Li's skills that Luc Besson (the producer) does well throughout the film to portray and utilize in order to represent the authenticity, gentleness, and power of Li's character. It's an appealing and effective quality for the heroine of a martial arts film, considering the nature of other such films that share the genre these days.
