A new biography of the great man, out next week, claims that he has seduced an unbelievable 12,775 women in his time.
The author, Peter Biskind, says he has based the figure on simple arithmetic supported by evidence from Beatty's friends and former lovers and, incredibly, says it does not include 'daytime quickies, drive-bys, casual gropings, stolen kisses and so on'.
Today, with the actor well into his 70s and having been married for nearly 20 years without a breath of scandal to actress Annette Bening, with whom he has four children, it is hard to imagine we are talking about the same man.
But for decades, according to Biskind, Beatty supplemented his relationships with stars such as Madonna with almost daily casual liaisons.
So insatiable was his sexual appetite, Biskind claims, that after losing his virginity at the age of 20, he has, on average, managed 246 sexual partners a year.
And they include people who were not exactly hard-pressed for a date. One thinks of Natalie Wood, Julie Christie, Jane Fonda, Brigitte Bardot, Britt Ekland, Joan Collins and Diane Keaton, to name a tiny fraction of his repertoire.

Back in the 1960s and 1970s, that’s when the Bond films started something that has brought them to what they are today. We sort of built up what they are today. I love being a Bond girl.’
