Australia has the feel of a black-and-white newsreel as the Second World War comes back to life in the form of a long-lost hospital ship.The AHS Centaur went down off Queensland's southern coast in 1943 after being torpedoed by a Japanese submarine.
The USS Mugford, an American destroyer, rescued just 64 survivors out of the 332 people on board.
The attack made front-page news around the world and the Australian government made use of the tragedy in its wartime propaganda, urging Australians to avenge the deaths of the 11 nurses who died on board.
The sole surviving nurse, Sister Ellen Savage, was awarded a bravery medal for gallantry after the sinking. Nurse Savage spent 35 hours on a raft before being rescued, helping others though seriously injured herself.
The ship was lost for more than 60 years until shipwreck hunter David Mearns found her under about two kilometres of water last month and first photographs of the wreck surfaced on Sunday.

What would’ve happened if, instead of enlisting the aid of Clint Eastwood, the prostitutes in “Unforgiven” had tried to track down the cowboys on their own? That’s the premise behind this script, and I have to say it’s a very interesting idea. The “hooker with a heart of gold” archetype is as old as the city of Jericho (literally), and it’s gotten to the point where unless there’s something really original in there (believe it or not, a great example comes from “Borat”), then the script probably isn’t going to stand apart. However, when the focus instead shifts to this character’s attempt to solve a murder, then it becomes far more palatable.
Of course, the key word here is “shifts”, and that leads to my main critique of this script: it’s unclear just what the overarching story is supposed to be. Let me say with all honesty that I don’t think I’ve ever read a script of this length that has this many plot threads that are developed—which certainly shows the writer’s ability—however I didn’t feel like what was supposed to be the main story was the center of attention as it should have been. In fact, I’ll go so far as to say that I feel like a far more effective script would use the murder as a secondary device that comes near the END of the script. Right now it seems like the writer wants this script to be similar to “Unforgiven” (as the logline indicates), while it felt a lot closer to “Raise the Red Lantern”—which is certainly a different kind of story, but a great one nonetheless.
For starters, let’s consider how much of this script actually adheres to the logline. Now the writer has been crafty with this logline, because technically what’s here meets what’s in the script, but it’s quite misleading: just how much does Iris “search through the sordid underbelly of an Old West mining town” for Petal’s...
