TCA Press Tour: Falco not at home with 'House'
&Quot;Nurse Jackie," the Showtime comedy starring Edie Falco as an addicted nurse, has a few similarities with Fox's "House." Both shows are centered on dedicated and savvy medical experts who have dysfunctional lives and edgy personalities. Both main characters constantly clash with staff and loved ones.But while some doctors may have expressed some reservations about "House," Falco said she has not encountered any ill feelings from members of the medical community about her show.
"They speak only about the love," Falco said today as she spoke to reporters during the first day of the Television Critics Assn. Press Tour. "They really only say nice things about us. People have been very kind."
She added that she's never seen "House," almost apologizing to reporters.
Falco said she continues to enjoy working on the show, even as her character gets deeper into trouble at work and grapples with being torn between her husband and her lover. She said she "immediately felt a visceral connection" with Jackie when she first read the pilot script, but continues to be "surprised" by the show's direction and plot twists.

Fans of black comedies such as Six Feet Under will have plenty to enjoy in BBC2’s latest American import, Nurse Jackie . A darker, grittier version of ER , the show focuses on the life and work of Jackie Peyton (Edie Falco from The Sopranos ), a hardworking, dedicated nurse who is most definitely no angel of mercy.
Not A Saint, Not A SinnerNever one to let rules get in the way of patient care, it’s soon clear that Jackie has her own way of dealing with the endless bureaucracy and “proper procedure” of a modern hospital. In the first episode she not only falsifies an organ donor form to ensure some good comes from the needless death of a patient, she also literally flushes away the ear of a man who will not face prosecution for attacking a prostitute thanks to his diplomatic immunity.
Working class and tough talking, Jackie has no qualms about telling off young hotshot Dr Fitch Cooper (Peter Facinelli) for ignoring her advice in treating a patient who subsequently dies. Nor is she thrilled to be saddled with ultra-keen student nurse Zoey Barkow (Merritt Wever), cutting her off mid-gush with “I don’t do chatty, I like quiet. Quiet and mean, those are my people.”
Why The Affair?Despite being (seemingly) happily married with two daughters, Jackie is having an affair with hospital pharmacist Eddie Walzer (Paul Schulze). Chronic back pain has also led to an addiction to prescription drugs, which Walzer willingly dispenses. Could she be feeling trapped in her marriage to impossibly handsome and dependable Kevin (Dominic Fumusa)? Jackie pointedly removes her wedding ring as soon as she arrives at work.
Being the most flawed medic to hit the small screen since Hugh Laurie’s Gregory House, it is a testament to Falco’s performance that she manages to make Jackie a sympathetic character despite her shortcomings. As with real nurses the world over, Jackie simply copes with everything that is thrown at her the best way she can, one day at a time. She hasn’t lost her desire to help, but has been around long enough to realize how the game is played.
