Gloria Swanson is amazing. Please see Male and Female (silent) or The Tresspasser (her first talking film). My favorite silent of hers is Manhandled. There is still a print available, but not on DVD.
She was one of the first actresses nominated for an academy award and was nominated three times total. She represented the '20s as a glorious silent film actress. She initially did well in the transition between silent and talking pictures, but eventually she was forgotten.
However, Billy Wilder remembered working well with her on an earlier picture and had her star in 1950s Sunset Blvd. This was one of the greatest screen performances of all time.
Unfortunately, Gloria Swanson lost at the Academy Awards this year and Judy Holliday was picked for Born Yesterday in 1950.
Gloria was more representative of the '20s than the '50s, but she left her greatest mark in the 1950s.

The sort of rough-hewn appeal epitomized by Wallace Beery (1885–1949) isn’t something that can be taught by Stanislavski or faked with The Method. It comes from within, and evokes American qualities and ideals that have never gone out of style.
Beery was born and raised in Kansas City, Missouri, the youngest son of three. He dropped out of school in fourth grade (”I was too dumb to get any farther”) and ran away for a few months, bumming around the Midwest, spurred onward not by a hatred of family but by a sense of pure adventure. At sixteen he lied his way into a job as an elephant handler with a circus, spending the next three years traveling across the country, and even crediting himself with being the first to train elephants to use their trunks to grab the tails of the elephants in front of them in order to keep them all in line. But eventually he realized that, where bull handling was concerned, “my ambition had been no ambition at all, that I was just drifting.” When Beery heard that his older brother Noah was working on Broadway in New York, he hurried there to try his hand at the acting game. (1921). About the former film he said, “I put inside the part all of the hatred against the world that had been piling up inside me for a year,” and in the latter, audiences gasped as his character blithely munched on an apple while directing the slaughter of scores of women and children. Beery’s performances were judged “screen masterpieces” at the time by critics, with breathless newspaper articles boasting that “Beery fairly lives on the hisses of the crowd.”

The Early Years of Gloria SwansonGloria Josephine May Swanson was born in Chicago, Illinois on March 27, 1899, to Adelaide Klanowski and Joseph Swanson. Her father was a Captain in the United States Army and they traveled to Key West, Florida and Puerto Rico, exposing Swanson to a wide variety of fashions. Swanson studied at the Hawthorne Scholastic Academy, a Chicago finishing school, and was expected to begin a career as an office worker. Instead, she visited the Essanay Film Manufacturing Company where it is believed she appeared in the 1914 film with Charlie Chaplin. During this time, she also met and married actor Wallace Beery. Beery convinced Swanson to move to California and introduced her to Hollywood. Swanson appeared in numerous Max Sennett Keystone comedies opposite Bobby Vernon before Keystone Studios went bankrupt.
Gloria Swanson Becomes a Silent Film StarIn 1918, Swanson moved to the newly-formed Triangle Studios where she starred in the silent drama . By that time, she had appeared in over 25 films. In 1919, she caught the attention of Cecil B. DeMille and was offered a contract with Paramount Pictures, competing with the equally-talented Clara Bow for top romantic leading lady roles and starring with some of the most famous men in Hollywood, such as Rudolph Valentino. In 1920, Swanson appeared in a lion’s cage in This film made Swanson one of the most popular actresses of her time.
