Why is the old King James version of the Bible preferred by many?
In the church, a number of people feel that the old King James Bible (oKJV or KJV) is the only true, God sanctioned version of the Bible. Others seem to think it is the most accurate. Yet, a reading of the version shows it to be an archaic form of English that not only does not hold meaning in modern vernacular, but also contains mistranslations (such as the presence of unicorns). It also is a historically political translation, being the only popular translation ordered and overseen by government. What is it about the KJV that people feel is different or more spiritual than other translations?
It's traditional, but a lot think it has a closer translation to it's original 'meaning'. And it's easier to deconstruct when it's already written hard to read. Plus, as I have read that version several times word for word and come from a fanatic church, I can say that most believers like the 'mysterious' feel of that dialect and don't really ever read it as a book. Rather most believers like certain verses, or listening to ministers preach a two hour sermon on what one verse is supposed to mean and represent by itself. I told them I think it should be read as a book and interpreted by it's general meaning of good will toward men, but they laughed at me and threw me out.
Greensboro Celebrates MLK Day
GREENSBORO, N.C. - South of downtown, on a street that bears the name of one of the country's great civil rights leaders, Greensboro residents came out in droves Monday to celebrate the life and work of Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.The annual MLK Day parade down Martin Luther King Jr. Dr. was just one of dozens of events designed to honor King.
At St James Presbyterian Church, races and religions mingled over music and the messages King lived to teach.
"We will have different religions represented here because Dr. King, of course, was about bringing people together across the lines to form the beloved community, so the quality of life for all of us will be better," said Rev. Diane Givens Moffett, a pastor at St. James.
King taught that community service can help overcome discrimination, and to that end, volunteers from the American Friends Service Committee organized a volunteer day.
