Avatar (12A) — Is James Cameron’s 21st century sci-fi parable on the evils of colonisation and the power of nature over militia.
In 2054 the distant moon Pandora, occupied by a race of peaceful, nature-loving, giant blue-skinned natives called the Na’vi, is being invaded and scorched by an expedition from a desolated Earth to capitalise on rich mineral resources.
A project is devised to create clones of the Na’vi bonded with human DNA to allow them to become avatars functioning with the human minds of an operator locked in a thought transfer pod.
The main operative is an ex-marine paraplegic, Jake Sully (Sam Worthington), and through his avatar he experiences the joy of walking again.
He is ordered to infiltrate the Na’vi to prepare the way for invasion but, as he grows to know and respect their way of life, he meets and falls in love with a warrior girl, Neytiri, settting off far reaching and tragic complications.

There’s also an appearance from major arts figure, Sir Christopher Frayling.

NICOLAS ROEG : London-born Nicolas Roeg served in the military as a projectionist, and entered the movie industry immediately after World War II as a gofer and apprentice editor. He joined MGM's British studios in 1950, and eventually became a cinematographer in 1959, working on a multitude of films of all types, including work on Lawrence of Arabia.
He moved into the director's chair with 1970’s Performance, then made a major impression with the low-keyed, eerily compelling drama Walkabout, starring Jenny Agutter. By the mid-'70s, Roeg was one of our most respected filmmakers, responsible for the unsettling cult classic, Don’t Look Now, and the sci-fi drama, The Man Who Fell to Earth, which gave David Bowie his first film role. Roeg’s output throughout the 80s unfortunately failed to maintain the inspired creativity of his output in the previous decade. In 1990, he showed promise for the new decade with what was perhaps his most successful film to date, the visually lavish family fantasy, The Witches, based on Roald Dahl’s beloved children's book. However, the film wasn't a true indicator for his output in the rest of his career. In 2009, he was the subject of a special BAFTA tribute event, which included contributions from Terry Gilliam, Danny Boyle, David Bowie and Jenny Agutter.
