SCAD breaks ground on museum
In about 18 months, an 86-foot-tall lantern will rise from the skyline along Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
It will sit atop what will be the Savannah College of Art and Design's Museum of Art Complex, which will include the Walter O. Evans Center for African American Art. Its namesake is as excited about its potential for west downtown Savannah rejuvenation as he is its architectural impact and its artistic outreach.
"I'm looking for this to do major things in this community," he said. "The building itself is a work of art. This is going to be Savannah's Louvre.
"Content-wise, through its classrooms and educational programs and an endowment for a biannual symposium on African American art, this will be the top center for the study of African American art anywhere on this planet."
Evans, his wife, Linda, and four generations of his family joined SCAD officials and local community leaders Thursday to mark the latest stage in the project with a groundbreaking at the site, behind SCAD's Museum of Art at MLK and Turner Boulevard.
