Some trendy women had tried to accept different culture as they wore Western dress with Western hair style instead of traditional Japanese dress with Japanese hair style.
On that fashion, Louise Brooks was good example because she was one of famous Hollywood movie star. Many Hollywood movies were on screen in Japan those days according to the column.
The new fashion was especially accepted to women who particularly had certain outside job from house such as typist, department store's clerk, bus guard, hostess, journalistic reporter etc. They had some new sense of values and tried to liberate themselves from the old conservative way of life.

Born in 1906 in Cherryvale, Kansas, Brooks had a career not unlike many others for a while, dancing in "Ziegfeld Follies of 1925" and "George White's Scandals" on Broadway, working her way up in film, eventually catching the eye of Austrian-born Pabst thanks to her turn in Howard Hawks' "A Girl in Every Port." Here, Pabst thought, is the Lulu for me, and for the world.
