Mae West was considered highly risque and sexually dangerous, that's why she had such wide appeal. She was what was known as
'bawdy.' Not dirty, necessarily, but close to the line of what was acceptable. She bacame known in Vaudeville where many early stage and screen stars first began: W.C. Fields, Buster Keaton, The Marx Brothers and Jack Benny, to name just a few. Mae West was a comedienne, actress and writer, as well as a poet. She was on the stage and screen from 1907 to 1978. That says something for her impact on Hollywood and New York! She was in 'Diamond Lil', 'Lady Lou' and one of my favorites, 'She Done him Wrong.' She played against Cary Grant in one of his early rolls, starring in 'I'm No Angel.' The movie was nominated for Best Picture in 1933.
She was best known for her double entendres. This was her way of getting around the censors who heavily edited her work. In one film, 'Night after Night,' Mae is flashing a great deal of diamond jewelry and a hat girl states 'Goodness, what lovely diamonds.' Mae retorts, 'Goodness had nothing to do with it, dearie.' Another line Mae is well known for is 'Is that a pistol in your pocket or are you just happy to see me?' That was pure Mae and everyone laughed, they still do. She was risque, bold, flashy, and daring. Mae did what a lot of women dreamed of doing, but didn't dare. They could watch Mae on screen and get a kick out of her. Not all women did, of course. But many did. And so did the men!
During WW II the life preservors which sailors used were called Mae Wests because in rhyming slang - West for Vest and breast. She was very curvaceous. She was also a subject of a Cole Porter song 'You're the Tops.' MAE-West is also the name of the Metropolitan Area Exchange West. One of the first tier 1 hubs to connect all the major TCP/IP networks which made up the internet in 1992. It's not documented that the creators named it after the actress, but it is rather interesting, isn't it? Salivor Dali created the Mae West Lips Sofa after the actress.
I'd say Mae West had quite a career.
