Dominican Government lends Haiti a little-used international airport
SANTO DOMINGO.- Haiti ambassador Fritz Cinéas yesterday announced that from now on, the Maria Montez International Airport, located in southwestern Barahona province, will be the terminal which Haitians who live abroad will use to travel to and from Port-au-Prince. “Barahona then, would be like the airport of Port-au-Prince. The passengers would arrive in airplanes at Barahona, and they would go to Port-au-Prince in buses.”
The Haitian diplomat called the Dominican authorities decision to facilitate the Maria Montez a great gesture of solidarity with the Haitian people, who’ll be able to travel to or return from abroad via that terminal, which since built in the late 1980s is considered a white elephant.
Although dozens of flights and humanitarian aid for Haiti arrive in Maria Montez daily, Cinéas noted that it was in Monday’s meeting held in the border town Jimaní, when his Government formally requested it from the Dominican authorities.
The Haitian diplomat, who reviewed his country’s situation after the powerful quake which devastated its capital, also thanked the Dominican Government’s to build the span of highway from Jimaní to the Haiti town Fond Parisien.

Although Cinéas considered the lack of coordination in the aid arriving from different parts of the world unfortunate, he hailed the solidarity of Dominicans and, in a message to the Haitians residing in the country, he invited them “to be worthy” of the support received by the Dominican Government and the community.
