The speed with which films pass from screen to disc is illustrated this week by the release of The Queen of Spades (1949) as part of Optimum's Thorold Dickinson collection. Revived in cinemas on Boxing Day (but reviewed here on 10 December), this is a chilling adaptation of the Pushkin short story, in which everything was geared towards disconcertion. The contrasts between grandeur and malignancy that William Kellner incorporated into his art direction were emphasised by Otto Heller's angular Expressionist imagery and reinforced by Hazel Wilkinson's edgy editing and Georges Auric's portentous score. Even the performances were wilfully and deliciously melodramatic.
But Dickinson was not always so successful in bringing his artistic vision to the screen. Born in Bristol and supposedly descended from both the dwarf Thorold depicted in the Bayeux Tapestry and Lady Godiva, Dickinson read history at Keble College. However, he was sent down during his final year for over-indulging his passion for cinema and he found work as an assistant to the acclaimed director, George Pearson. Over the next few years, Dickinson mastered the art of editing and he became a leading member of the Film Society, which did much to bring world cinema to British audiences.
Susan George To Play 1066 Queen
The actress has joined Oliver! star Mark Lester in 1066. She’ll play Queen Emma in the historical epic, which is being directed by Robin Jacob.
Jacob tells WENN, “We are extremely happy to announce Susan?s attachment to 1066. She is a tremendously versatile actress who will bring a wealth of experience to the demanding role of Queen Emma, who was the powerful and sometimes ruthless wife of no less than two Kings of England - Aethlered ‘The Unready’ and the conquering Dane King Knut.
“It is very reassuring to know that Queen Emma is in such safe hands.”
Lester will play King Harold II in the film.
