Boudu Saved From Drowning (1932). Jean Renoir is a sort of patron saint to filmmakers who value spontaneity over storyboarding, and this early effort remains not only one of his most enjoyable works, but also one of the earliest examples of the fully formed Renoir style. The actor Michel Simon, who previously starred for Renoir in the drama "La Chienne" as well as the comedy "Tire au flanc," plays the aptly named Priape Boudu, a bum who has decided to end his existence by throwing himself into a river. Enter M. Lestingois (Charles Granval), a well-meaning bourgeois who decides to save the tramp's life. Carrying his heroic action one step farther, he takes Boudu into his home where, a la Pygmalion, he proposes to improve his life by taking him under his wing. He - and his wife and his maid - quickly find that his good intentions cannot rehabilitate this free spirit.
